GRM Development Fund Project Starts at Sunrise Children's Village, Cambodia
Construction has started on a GRM Development Fund-sponsored fruit tree nursery and plant propagation centre at Sunrise Children’s Village, an orphanage in Cambodia. The project will teach the children valuable agricultural skills and also offers good income-earning potential for the orphanage. Plant propagation skills are limited in Cambodia and tropical fruits are imported in large quantities from Vietnam and Thailand. The Sunrise children will be taught how to propagate valuable species and sell the seedlings through various outlets. More than $43,000 will be spent over two years on the development, which covers land reformation, construction, the provision of nursery produce and supplies, and staff training. A major milestone of raising the project site above the flood line was achieved last month, enabling construction to start on the nursery structure. The project is due for completion in the second half of 2005. The Sunrise Children's Village is operated by the Australia Cambodia Foundation, an Australian non-profit non-government charity, which provides a home to orphaned and disadvantaged children in Cambodia. The GRM Development Fund was established in 2004 and to date has donated in excess of $100,000 to causes and activities around the world.
