Project Purpose/Outcomes :
Australia responded to the Royal Thai Government's request for assistance following the catastrophic December 2004 tsunami by offering specific technical assistance and capacity building in sustainable tourism with best-practice guidelines. Thus the Andaman Coast Sustainable Tourism Project was developed and is now implemented by GRM under contract with the Queensland Government in consultation with relevant Thai agencies to provide technical assistance to the tourism industry on the Andaman Sea coast. The Project will deliver sustainable outcomes in tourism reconstruction and development for affected communities within a framework of improved planning and capacity building.  The over-riding principle of the project is based on adherence to sustainable tourism development, in which environmental conservation is integrated fully with economic, social and cultural values.
Achievements :
As well as the achievement of the key activities outlined in the project description the project has delivered the following significant reports -
  • Community Based Tourism – Interim Report (Components 4.3, 4.4, 4.5)
  • Coral Reef and Tourism Management Network – Interim Report (Components 4.2, 4.4, 4.5)
