Project Purpose/Outcomes :

The ultimate goal of the soil survey project is to ensure that land-use in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is sustainable. The overall objective is to provide soil-related information for decision-makers and to promote sustainable and planned development through enhancing the available knowledge of soils. Within the scope of the project, the specific objectives are to:

  1. Conduct an Extensive Soil Survey for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi at scale of 1:100,000.
  2. By interpreting the Extensive Survey results, identify 1 million hectares area that have the highest potential for irrigated agriculture.  An area of 400,000 ha will then be selected and surveyed at scale 1:25,000.
  3. Interpret the soil map units, soil classes through GIS and publish different thematic maps at scale 1:500,000 for several uses.
  4. Design and implement a web-based Soil Information System using GIS Technology for the storage, processing, retrieval and management of soil-related information.
  5. Train national manpower.
  6. Establish a Soil Samples Archive at a location specified by EAD.

Achievements :

Extensive (Phase 1) & Intensive (Phase 2) Survey of entire Emirate are now complete.
