New Book on Tackling Alcohol Problems A First for South Africa

The AusAID-funded South Africa Capacity Building Program, managed by GRM International, has achieved a major milestone with the completion of a new book, which will help community-based organisations address alcohol problems.

Tackling Alcohol Problems, by Dr Maggie Brady and Ms Kristie Rendall-Mkosi, was launched in South Africa on May 4th 2005 after three years in the making.

This user-friendly, action-oriented book offers practical advice and strategies for managing alcohol problems and is the first of its kind in South Africa.

GRM implemented the production of book by engaging the expert services of Dr Brady from the Australian National University (ANU) and Moulie MacKenzie, also of ANU.

The project also actively involved more than 30 South Africans in its production and gave staff at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) School of Public Health the opportunity to learn skills in the production of culturally relevant and appropriate health promotion resources.

Sales of the book will assist the NGO Dopstop Association, an organisation founded in 1997 to address alcohol abuse and problems that are largely a result of the “dop system" (where farm workers were partly remunerated with wine).
