Malampa Province tourism in Vanuatu goes from strength to strength

Some of the first tour operators receive accredited trek coaching on an active volcano called Marum on the Vanuatu island of Ambrym.

EQUIPPING local tour guides with the skills to take holidaymakers on treks into an active Vanuatu volcano is one of several new successful tourism initiatives from an AusAID-funded TVET Sector Strengthening Program in the Malampa Province.

Local tour operators are saying the growing tourism industry can be attributed to the TVET Sector Strengthening Program, aimed at boosting economic development in the province made up of three islands - Malakula, Ambrym and Paama.

One of the GRM International-managed program’s latest initiatives is the first ever accredited trek coaching session to be delivered on the plains of the Marum Volcano in Ambrym, as part of the Malampa TVET Centre’s integrated program of skills development to boost the local tourism industry.

13 tour guides across the island of Ambrym recently participated in the hands-on coaching session – delivered in partnership with the Malampa Tourism Office, the TVET Centre, and successful tour guide and trekking expert, Pascal Guillet, from Vanuatu Ecotours.

Local tourism operators, who have already attended the new course, are saying the combination of accredited training and targeted coaching is providing them with the skills to increase the success of their businesses.

“Before I was just working in the dark, but now, after this coaching, I understand what I need to do to meet national tourism standards,” said one of the first participants.

“Also, we used to work in isolation across the island, now we see the importance of working together.”

So far, coaching is focused on building the skills of local operators, and to package and deliver high-quality treks to meet the standards and expectations of tourists, as well as the Vanuatu Tourism Office.

Another participant added: “I am so grateful for this hands-on coaching that comes right to the place where I live and work.”
